Search for a medical practitioner by scanning your Überweisung
Project goal
Users who get a medical transfer paper (Überweisung) can scan it with the app to directly search for the medical specialty they need.
My contributions
Defined research plan, goals and questionnaire. Interviewed 3 users, extracted pain points and current user journey. Defined problem statement, value proposition and decided to add 2 core features to the project: scan the medical überweisung to directly search for doctors, and add recommended doctors by friends.
Why
Health and medicine care are topics that speak close to my heart and I want to find solutions to current problems.
Current prototype

Problem I'm solving
Users who get a medical transfer paper (Überweisungsschein) can scan it with the app to get the Specialty (which doctor to look for), Address (so it searches near you), Insurance (what type, private or public), and the data range is set by default from the present day to 2 weeks, which is editable.

The scanning and data extraction allows for less human error when looking for a doctor, less typing and better matching with specialty+diagnosis.

Evolution of the homepage and design decisions

-
One of the main questions to answer was "What is the main action on this screen" and the answer is "Scan the Überweisungsschein" (Primary action). The secondary action is to search manually. Therefore increased the size of the font to be able to scan easier what you have to do and minimized the secondary action.
-
Changed the UI background to a gradient to be less of an impact visually for the user when scanning from top to bottom.
-
On the last screen I changed the typeface and font. Also added specific values for line height and letter spacing to make it more legible and visually appealing.
-
I corrected in the last screen icon size and made the action hierarchy easier to visualize.
The beginning of the project
1. Wrote a Research plan, goals, questionnaire and small criteria for my participants.
2. Conducted three 60min interviews with residents in Germany and made an Affinity diagram, extracting insights, pain points and wishes.
Research goals
-
Learn the pain points people face when searching and booking a medical practitioner
-
How do they search for a medical practitioner
-
Where do they search for a medical practitioner (which resources they use)
-
How long does it take to find a medical practitioner and book an appointment?
-
What can we learn from the user flow to successfully find a doctor and book an appointment within a desired timeframe?
-
Are there any improvements users would like to see in their user journey?
-

-
Discover current ways of finding medical practitioners in Germany are (websites, apps)
-
Discover what type of appointments are offered (Regular vs Acute)
-
Is there a big network that connects all medical practitioners and specialties in Germany?

Initial name and purpose
Initial name of the project: creating a better way to find and book a medical practitioner's appointment

Purpose: I want to learn from people living in Germany, how their experience is when they have to search and book an appointment with a medical practitioner. Oftentimes I hear friends/colleagues say something negative about this experience. I want to find out what can be improved in the user flow.
Interview results
Most important learnings
-
Users trust more the doctors if they are recommended by friends or colleagues
-
Being able to book online is very important for all users, as it reduces the time it takes to book one. One user said that they would prefer to book a doctor if it could be done online, before going to another that didn't had any presence online
-
Apps commonly used are: Doctolib. (Avi was mentioned to get a sick leave, and Jameda was used only by 1 user once and not remembering the user experience)
-
Not all medical practitioners have online presence, and that creates frustration because it means having to call or go in person. The consequence is less available appointments online and extra manual work to get one.
-
A trans user expressed how difficult it is to find doctors who are accepting of transitioning individual.
-
Booking an appointment successfully in a decent amount of time is perceived as more painful than finding a doctor.
-
Most important aspects when booking a specialist are: location, availability (how soon and online presence), language, type of insurance, automatic calendar invitation.
-
To have a feature of notification for earlier appointments are perceived as a nice to have
User journey

Prioritisation
After talking to my users, I learned that 2 features were the most requested and important for the users to reach their goal and have a better experience:

1. Reduce the steps it takes to search/find the right medical practitioner.
2. View/indication of medical practitioners recommended by friends or colleagues
Current status: doing prototype iterations and building design system with Figma variables
